“Keeping it would be a mistake”

JAMIE CARRAGHER has blasted Man Utd saying it would be a ‘mistake’ to keep star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, 37, scored a beauty to end his record goalscoring drought on Tuesday night, but Carragher says it’s not enough.

In a report with The Telegraph, the former Liverpool man wonders if the Portuguese captain and his individual skills are a good fit for Rangnick’s pressing system.

The tele-pundit says that despite the goals, the Red Devils were a ‘more balanced and unified team’ before Ronaldo came on the scene.

He said: “United made a mistake when they re-signed Ronaldo last summer.

“It will be a bigger one who will keep him next season.”

The strops and whistles when the freak is replaced only add to the ‘noise’ around Old Trafford, claims Carragher.

“Ronaldo can’t ignore where a lot of that noise is coming from.

United are far from the national rhythm and it would be a major surprise if they won the Champions League.

“There was some noise after Ronaldo’s response to his substitution against Brentford in the Premier League.

“There is noise generated every time Ronaldo heads straight into the tunnel after another disappointing result.

“When a manager leaves out a 37-year-old man, there shouldn’t be a fuss.”

Carragher draws a comparison to the United squad of 2006, when Alex Ferguson sold top scorer Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch striker was dismissed to pave the way for Ronaldo and other young forwards.

As Rangnick moves into a consultancy role next season, Carragher reckons a new boss could do without the Portuguese powerhouse.

“Ronaldo doesn’t press. Even at his peak, he didn’t press.

“United are way off the pace domestically and it would be a major surprise if they won the Champions League.”
