The German goalkeeper returned home on a one-season loan in 2020-21 but saw little playing time and now faces another big call
Loris Karius is preparing to make a decision on his future at Liverpool, with the German goalkeeper admitting that a loan transfer to Union Berlin in 2020-21 was a mistake.
The 28-year-old returned home as he remained fairly low in the pecking order at Anfield and was unlikely to make his way above Alisson and Adrian.
After spending time with Besiktas in Turkey, another short-term deal was put in place, but only four appearances were made for Union by a man approaching the last 12 months of his contract in Merseyside.
What was said?
Asked by Bild About his immediate past and future, Karius said: “Of course when I moved (to Union) I was told I would play, otherwise I wouldn’t have come either.
“We looked each other in the eye at the end of the season and shook hands.
“Everyone told me that I was incredibly important to the team and that they were sorry for the way it had gone. But when you look at all of it, it certainly wasn’t quite. fair.
“For now, I will be at Liverpool on July 12. There is still a lot going on right now. Due to the European Championship and the crown, the transfer market will pick up quite late. I will keep everything open and will make the right decision for myself. “
He added: “I want to prove something to myself and to people. I am extremely hungry and motivated.
“You should never rule anything out. Last year I was gone and would have been in Liverpool’s goal two weeks later due to goalkeeper injuries.
“But I don’t always want to depend on such factors, neither do you want your colleagues to do so. I keep all options open and will make the right decision for myself.
“It’s important for me that it comes in. The club has to be ready, I have to be ready and the coach has to be ready. Last year again taught me that you have to exchange ideas intensively with these responsible and that you really have to pay attention to your intuition.
“I don’t know if this has to be something completely exotic. But Spain, Italy – I can imagine something like that already, if it fits.”
The bigger picture
Karius has not featured for Liverpool since his error-ridden performance against Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final.
Reinforcements were recruited by Jurgen Klopp that summer, with a reliable option between the wanted sticks.
Alisson has been this, Adrian provides an experienced back-up and 22 years Caoimhin Kelleher has just entered into a new long-term contract.
All of this helps push Karius towards exits, with his expiring contract factored in as well, but it remains to be seen if La Liga and Serie A interest can be found.
