Karim Benzema breaks Chelsea hearts as Thomas Tuchel’s side almost pull off heroic comeback against Real Madrid in UCL classic

Chelsea beat Real Madrid in the Champions League 3-2 but their comeback was awfully short as Karim Benzema haunted the Blues again.

Thomas Tuchel’s side scored all three goals needed to earn the tie at the Santiago Bernabeu, but Rodrygo and the Frenchman spared the hosts’ blushes as they won the draw 5-4 on aggregate.

Benzema has once again shown how crucial he is for Los Blancos

Although it was a tall order, goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner gave the Blues the three needed but unfortunately their efforts were in vain.

The first leg saw Los Blancos flex their muscles as a superb hat-trick from Karim Benzema gave them a two-goal advantage.

But Thomas Tuchel’s side never stopped believing and made a perfect start at the Bernabeu.

Chelsea won the high ball after good pressing from Werner.

He won the ball and fed Mount, who from 15 yards out in the center of the goal curled it beautifully into the right corner past Thibaut Courtois.

Speaking on talkSPORT, ex-Blues player Scott Minto spoke about the quality of the shot and Mount’s impact in the team.

“Very good Chelsea play there. It’s an absolutely stunning finish. That’s why, even when he’s not playing well, Mason Mount needs to be on this team.

Mount gave the Blues the perfect start but their reign as starters is now over

The academy product’s goal also meant he was only the third Englishman to score at the Bernabeu, following in the footsteps of Leeds star Alan Smith in 2001 and then Danny Welbeck for Manchester United in 2013.

In the second half, the Blues knew their task, one goal would send a draw into extra time, another would win the whole game.

And just six minutes into the second half, Rudiger, who was partly responsible for the third goal of the first leg, made amends.

Rising from a Mount corner, the German towered over all of Real’s players and produced a superb header down the right.
