Kanye West, now known as Ye, is best known for his hits such as Gold Digger and Stronger

Kanye West has never been afraid to upset people, but his recent tirades against Jews have been too much for many.

By early October, he was a billionaire musical artist and businessman and had done deals with some of the biggest brands in the world.

Fast forward just two months, and most of them no longer apply.

And it all started with a t-shirt.

Paris Fashion Week – October 3, 2022

At his Yeezy SZN 9 show, Kanye, now officially known as Ye, wears a t-shirt with a White Lives Matter slogan.

Anti-racism activists call it hate speech mocking the Black Lives Matter movement.

A photo of Kanye posing with conservative commentator Candace Owens, wearing a matching top, is going viral.

It’s not going well, and fans and fellow hip-hop stars are lining up to call it out.

Instagram Lockdown – October 7

Kanye immediately got involved with rapper Diddy, who posted a video criticizing the White Lives Matter shirts.

In an Instagram post, Kanye appears to suggest that Diddy is controlled by Jews. Ye is criticized for anti-Semitism and his account is suspended.

Adidas says it is reviewing its deal with Kanye.

48 hours on Twitter – October 10

Kanye – who hasn’t posted on Twitter for nearly two years – returns to the bird and takes aim at Facebook and Instagram boss Mark Zuckerberg.

He then posts a tweet that appears to be a threat directed at the Jewish people.

Twitter follows Instagram’s example and launches it.

Interview with Tucker Carlson – October 11

Website Vice obtains unaired footage from an interview with Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson.

It says these unused clips involve the rapper making various anti-Semitic claims and repeating myths about Jewish people.

An episode of YouTube talk show The Shop: Uninterrupted featuring Kanye is being taken down for “more hate speech” due to its alleged use of hate speech.

Kanye was diagnosed with bipolar disorder years ago and has spoken publicly about his mental health struggles.

But at the time that interview was taken down, like-minded people told the BBC that mental health issues do not go hand in hand with anti-Semitism.

Brands turn their backs – End of October

A bad week for Kanye as big companies start announcing they no longer want to work with him.

Fashion house Balenciaga and talent scouts Creative Artists Agency are tracking bank JP Morgan and clothing store Gap in the abandonment of the artist.

Adidas is under increasing pressure to do the same.

Goodbye Adidas, goodbye billionaire status – October 25

Adidas announces it is parting ways with Kanye.

Cutting the partnership means Adidas will suffer a net loss of £217million in 2022.

But it’s a bigger loss for Kanye, who is set to earn $1.5 billion from his deal with the sportswear giant.

The American financial magazine Forbes claims that he is no longer a billionaire and assesses his new net worth at $400 million.

Shady Situation – October 27

American shoe company Skechers said Kanye showed up at their headquarters “without notice or invitation” and had to be kicked out.

He says he has no intention of working with him and condemns his previous comments.

Adidas Scandal – November 22

American magazine Rolling Stone publishes a long article claiming that West had engaged in “toxic” behavior against Adidas employees.

He declines to comment on the feature, but two days later announces that he has launched an investigation into the allegations.

Campaign Ye 24 – 25 November

Kanye announces that he plans to run for President of the United States in 2024.

Prior to that, reports are circulating that he is dining at Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago golf club in Florida with far-right political commentator Nick Fuentes.

Infowars and another Twitter ban – December

Kanye appears in Infowars by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

He wears a face covering throughout the interview, praises Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, and rails against sin, pornography, and the devil.

A few hours after the broadcast, he was suspended from Twitter again for “violating our rule against incitement to violence”.

And then ?

Kanye is known to be unpredictable, so this is unlikely to be the end of the saga.

His music remains popular and fans have seen it in their annual Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay roundups.

But there are reports of some users demanding the streaming giants take down his music.

Fans have already told Newsbeat they might consider skipping his tracks – so time will tell if he’ll still be in our top tracks next year.
