As High Court set to overturn abortion as a constitutional right, Vice President warns against government interference in private affairs

After a year of blameless Covid-19 vaccine mandates, Vice President Kamala Harris warns government will infringe on individual liberties if US Supreme Court strikes down constitutional protection of abortion rights as intended .

“Basically, it’s about our future as a nation, whether we live in a country where the government can interfere in personal decisions,” Harris said Thursday during a videoconference meeting with abortionists and abortion advocates. “This is our future.”

At stake is a Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark 1973 decision that protected abortion as a constitutional right. A draft of the court’s 5-3 decision overturning Roe v Wade and leaving the abortion issue to the states to decide was leaked to the media earlier this month. The decision should be made officially at the end of June or the beginning of July.

The vice president’s virtual meeting with abortion providers came the same day Oklahoma lawmakers passed a bill banning abortion from the time of “fertilization.” Governor Kevin Stitt has pledged to sign and enact any anti-abortion legislation that comes to his desk, as he did when he approved a bill last month making pregnancy termination a crime for abortionists.

“Think about it for a second, from the moment of fertilization”, said Harris. “It’s outrageous, and it’s just the latest in a string of extreme laws across the country.” She added that these laws are designed to “punish and control women”.

Harris argued that the Supreme Court’s decision poses a threat to all Americans, not just women, because the original Roe v Wade decision was based on a finding that banning abortion would violate the right to privacy.

“The right to privacy that forms the basis of Roe is the same right to privacy that protects the right to use contraception and the right to marry the person you love, including someone of the same sex” , she says. “Cancelling Roe opens the door to the restriction of these rights.”

It would be a direct attack on the fundamental right to self-determination, to live and to love without government interference.

However, another landmark decision in an abortion case – Planned Parenthood v Casey in 1992 – found that terminating a pregnancy is a one-time act, unlike other privacy rights, because it involves consequences for others, including the life that is interrupted. The 5-to-4 decision in the Casey case upheld that abortion was constitutionally protected, but it opened the door for states to impose restrictions, as long as they did not impose “overload” on people seeking an abortion.

“Kamala Harris just repeated the lie that reversing Roe would threaten birth control and marriage rights,” say it Reverend Frank PavoneCatholic priest and anti-abortion activist.
