Greek MEP Eva Kaili has been suspended from her duties as vice-president of the European Parliament after being arrested on Friday in connection with a corruption investigation.
Speaker of Parliament Roberta Metsola has suspended Kaili with immediate effect – but does not have the power to permanently remove her from her top job.
“In the light of the ongoing judicial investigations carried out by the Belgian authorities, President Metsola has decided to suspend with immediate effect all the powers, duties and tasks that have been delegated to Eva Kaili in her capacity as Vice-President of the European Parliament” , said a spokesperson. for Metsola. Kaili had already been suspended by the Socialists and Democrats and expelled from the centre-left Pasok party in Greece. But she cannot be completely jettisoned from the role of vice-president before a vote of the main leaders of the political groups in the assembly, and then of the full Parliament.
Belgian police arrested Kaili on Friday as part of a corruption probe into suspected illegal lobbying activities by Qatar.
