John Oliver returned to the studio for his first show on the set of “Last Week Tonight” since the start of the pandemic in the spring of 2020.
And he wasted no time in lashing out at Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a hockey-loving tyrant who clung to power for nearly three decades and encountered growing opposition with a brutal crackdown that includes the torture of dissidents.
Just last week, opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova was sentenced to 11 years in prison after a largely secret trial.
Lukashenko has denied a coronavirus problem stressing that the virus cannot be seen, jailed critics who set up teddy bears with protest signs and are so embarrassed about losing their hair that photographers are only allowed to take pictures photos of him only from certain angles.
As this seems to be his most painful point, Oliver spent part of the segment taunting him about his hair… or the lack of it, with photos from multiple angles.
Oliver also performed a clip in which Lukashenko demanded that people stop insulting him, insisting that it is not legal anywhere in the world.
He took this as a challenge.
“Your costume is too big, you suck at hockey, and whatever you do with your hair it just doesn’t work,” Oliver said, then raised his arms in victory. “See? Not in jail!
