Rejecting the anecdote as “compound,” Omar called Boebert a “jester [who] looks down when she sees me at the Capitol. She tweeted that was “Sad that she thinks sectarianism has its influence” adding that “Anti-Muslim fanaticism” was not “Funny and shouldn’t be standardized. “
“Congress cannot be a place where hateful and dangerous Muslim tropes are not condemned” she wrote. Omar and Rashida Tlaib (D-Michigan), who are part of a group of progressive lawmakers collectively called “the squad,” were the first two Muslim women elected to the United States Capitol.
The clip, which has been viewed more than 2.8 million times on Twitter, has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for Boebert to be censored and stripped of her committee roles. Tlaib tweeted such as “pathetic racist lies” would put Omar’s life in danger and “Increase hate crimes against Muslims”.
“Continuous silence [and] inaction towards this hateful colleague and others promotes violence. It has to stop “, she wrote.
Other squad members also responded. Representative Cori Bush (D-Missouri) describe Capitol Hill as “Toxic work environment” for Muslims, with “bigots systematically [spewing] racist vitriol, Islamophobic without control and without consequence.
Meanwhile, Ayanna Pressley (D-Massachusetts) called remarks as “shameful, deeply offensive [and] dangerous” display of “Islamophobia” against Omar and called on anyone acting in this way to be “Denounced … and held to account.” “
