Receiving praise from Rafael Benitez was like trying to get blood out of a stone when he was Liverpool manager.
And it looks like the Everton boss hasn’t changed his ways since, with Andros Townsend telling Sky Sports he received criticism from Benitez for his position despite a stunning goal in the Toffees’ win over Burnley.
And when Monday Night Football got the chance to speak to Benitez, Carragher couldn’t resist a cheeky search against his former boss.
Carragher said: “We spoke to Andros Townsend following his big goal. You spoke to him on the pitch at the end of the game and he said you were critical of his position…
“I’m just wondering if this shows that you haven’t changed as a manager?” “
Benitez replied: “When you talk about a winning mentality, you have to try to improve everything. The manager must always be dissatisfied… if we can improve every player by five percent, the team will be much better.
MNF presenter Dave Jones ended the interview by asking Benitez to congratulate Carragher and the Spaniard did, sort of …
Benitez said: “To be honest he had some really good managers!”
Everton’s Rafa-lution is in full swing, with the Toffees scoring 10 of a possible 12 points this season.
They fell behind at Goodison Park with Ben Mee nodding in front of the visitors, however, the home side fought back and then some.
A header from Michael Keane and strikes from Townsend and Demarai Gray helped Everton win 3-1 with all of their goals scored in the span of seven minutes.
