President Biden must have ignored good military advice in abandoning Afghanistan. No one who graduated from training camp would have planned a military operation like this.

There are old military adages that just can’t be ignored: “Plans are useless, but planning is everything. “No plan survives contact with the enemy.” “The enemy gets a vote.” It looks like Biden paid so much attention to it that the toddler in the emergency room stuck to “Don’t Eat Tide Pods.”

Here is a short list where Biden and his military advisers had to go their separate ways. If they didn’t, then they were just as incompetent as the president.

1. Ignore your allies. Churchill once said that the only thing worse than fighting with allies is fighting without them. Biden opted for a “no plan” plan. The United States would collapse and, in the worst case scenario, Afghanistan would collapse thereafter. This did not require any coordination with the Afghans, neighboring countries or NATO allies. It created chaos. The 55-day fight in Beijing was better organized.

2. Give up heights. Today, we’re not all whistling Dixie because the Union Army refused to cede ground in the Battle of Gettysburg. In Kabul, the highlight was the US air base at Bagram. The base was abandoned so that there would be more troops to cover the embassy and the airport without putting more boots on the ground in Kabul. It was as risky as fighting the Battle of Britain without planes.

3. Charge the enemy. Military operations are supposed to take options away from your enemy. The United States has become totally dependent on the good graces of the Taliban for the evacuation of the Kabul airport. It would have been like asking the Nazis to plan the D-Day invasion.

4. Statement of mission accomplished. Who can forget that President George W. Bush raised his thumb under an iconic banner and then fought a bloody insurgency in Iraq?

It was foolish of Biden to boast of a “greater success than the Berlin Airlift.” It was like waving a red flag in front of the bull, making the airport an even more tempting target for terrorists and compounding the humiliation of the American retreat.

5. End one endless war by starting another. Wars do not end with turning your back on the enemy. You would think Biden would have learned this when he replaced Obama in Iraq, Syria and Libya.

Biden most likely ended this endless path by unleashing a new global war on terrorism, let alone crippling the United States in competing with China over South Asia.

The point is, US influence in Afghanistan is weaker today than when Bill Clinton blindly launched cruise missiles at Bin Laden.

No military advisor worthy of his stars would have suggested any of these measures, which undermined solid military action. At the very least, what was conclusively proven last week is that Biden is a terrible Commander-in-Chief.
