Israel Folau did not return from Australia to France

Israel Folau was released by the Catalan Dragons after failing to return from Australia due to “personal family circumstances”.

The international dual code Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia in 2019 for a social media post deemed discriminatory by the rugby union federation and joined the Dragons in early 2020, but did not return from Australia to France for train earlier this year.

Former Kangaroo and State of Origin center, 32, who has been under contract with the Dragons for 2021, has applied to the Queensland Rugby League to compete in the local Gold Coast competition with his two brothers.

Dragons Chairman Bernard Guasch said: “Israel has been great with us in 2020 on and off the pitch and we wanted to facilitate negotiations to reach a deal.

“He told us he wanted to play alongside his two brothers and we didn’t want to stop him. We wish him all the best for the next chapter of his career.”
