The Irish Guineas festival kicks off this weekend for another classic in the world of flat racing.
Curragh Racecourse hosts this magnificent event which sees Aidan O’Brien compete for an eleventh 1000 Guineas.
Overview of 2000 Guineas
This is contested at 1m and the famous Group 1 for 3 year olds takes place amidst a thrilling map and festival of racing throughout the weekend.
This year’s festival will be packed and create a spectacular atmosphere of spectators enjoying a high level sprint in the Irish sun.
O’Brien often dominates this race too, as do British Guineas, and other winners include the legendary Kingman (2014) in Juddmonte Farms colors as well as Siskin who won in 2020.
Over the past ten years, Michael Tabor’s colors have been the most prevalent with Power, Magician, Gleneagles and Churchill winning between 2012 and 2017.
Van Gogh placed third last year for O’Brien in the same silks as the first since Churchill in 2017, but those colors don’t feature at all this year.
2000 Guineas Betting Tip
Atomic Jones to place
This 11 runner field is very focused on two main fantasies with the rest 20/1 bar.
Native Trail in familiar Godolphin Blue is the quintessential favorite, and for good reason too.
Buckaroo, a winner of the course and the distance calls on the colors of Qatar Racing for Joseph O’Brien but even at 7/2 is still not well supported compared to the big favorite.
Charlie Appleby coaches Native Trail and his season has already seen a plethora of winners.
Native Trail’s unbeaten run ended by finishing second in the British 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in April and only beaten by stable mate Coroebus.
This is especially open for those who aren’t the two favorites and picking a placer could yield a lot of profit.
Atomic Jones is a whopping 40/1 in the first bets of the week, and was seen to good use even in defeat by finishing fourth behind Stone Age by nine lengths.
The same Stone Age he beat in September who is also Epsom Derby favourite.
Overview of the Irish 1000 Guineas
This is also contested over 1m but specifically for 3 year old fillies, and has over £400,000 in prize money.
In 2021, Empress Josephine stormed outside to land the feature by a short header to give O’Brien his tenth success in the Irish Guineas.
In 2020, it was a clean sweep of the 1000 Guineas in those familiar colors of Tabor, with Peaceful first, Fancy Blue and So Wonderful second and third.
Irish 1000 Guineas Betting Tip
Staging at 10/1
Tabor colors will see only one entry adorning the silks this year in the 1000 Guineas at Curragh, History.
Story stable mates for O’Brien include early favorite Tuesdays with Concert Hall and Lullaby the underdogs.
On Tuesday it was another Galileo filly who was beaten by two lengths in the British 1000 Guineas won by Cachet in early May and is just about market leader ahead of Homeless Songs.
The horse trained by DK Weld is in solid form but finished fifth here as a 2-year-old in the Moyglare Stud Stakes Group 1 competition.
But she improved considerably and won the Group 3 1000 Guineas Trial Stakes at Leopardstown after a break in April.
However, this rarely sees the eventual winner of the main event in May.
Based on this, as well as the attractiveness of 10/1 odds, Mise En Scene looks like an attractive bet.
The Qatar Racing-owned James Ferguson-trained horse was a non-runner for the Newmarket renewal and has been up there in tough contests and his form may put others off.
But delving deeper, it has only lost its last two races in Group 1 company, by fairly narrow margins.
Mise En Scene finished 10th when leaving the United States for the Breeders’ Cup juvenile fillies turf, by just four and a quarter lengths.
At Newmarket in October 2021, Inspiral beat the then 2-year-old boy by just three lengths, so he’s clearly a consistent guy who could improve on 200 days since last time out.
