MEXICO CITY — A local indigenous chief and his son died in a shootout with land invaders who tried to drive them from their lands near Nicaragua’s northern Caribbean coast, an environmental group said Monday.

Tránsito Melgara, a leader of Sukatpin, a Miskito community in Twi Waupasa territory, and his son Terlin Melgara, were killed on Saturday, said environmentalist Amaru Ruiz, director of the Del Río Foundation.
