India’s foreign ministry denied the claim, calling it “absurd and motivated”, and said in a statement it was expelling a Canadian envoy amid “growing concern over interference by Canadian diplomats in our internal affairs and their involvement in anti-Indian activities.”
Trudeau raised the issue with President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Canadian officials confronted India over the claims.
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said if the allegations prove true, it would constitute a “serious violation” of Canadian sovereignty.
The conflict arises against a backdrop of tense relations between the two countries. Canada abruptly suspended a trade mission with India on Friday.
