In the United Kingdom, independent pubs put to the test by the crisis

Published on :

Place of life, meeting and celebration, the pub, a real British institution, is also suffering from the crisis that the United Kingdom is going through. Report on the difficulties encountered by independent pubs in London, third episode of our series on the social and economic crisis across the Channel.

Several generations have frequented the Highbury Barn, an independent pub in north London. But in her office, the manager, Fatima, does the accounts. Rising energy prices increase the cost of running the pub and also affect the price of drinks and food. As a result, prices keep rising.

For customers – regulars who all live in the neighborhood – the pub remains an institution, but purchasing power has fallen. “People who used to drink ten pints now buy just one, explains Fatima. They also choose to have one big party instead of several. Before, the last week of the month was calm. from the 15th. The regulars explain it to us: ‘I don’t have enough money for the rest of the month.'”

Fatima has to negotiate regularly with her suppliers, which is not easy when you don’t belong to a big chain of pubs. In this context, initiatives are being put in place to help independent pubs find and retain new customers. Alison Boutoille has launched CityStack, a start-up developing a project with London pubs: customers can pay 20 pounds and receive in exchange for 100 pounds of vouchers.

“Groups have marketing teams and resources to develop their business, which is not at all the case with independent pubs, which are focused on recruiting staff and serving customers, explains Alison Boutoille. We launched this initiative to bring consumers to independent pubs where they wouldn’t necessarily have gone.”
