A young man was the victim of a rape, on the night of June 21 to 22, in the city center of Saint-Brieuc. Taken to the Saint-Brieuc hospital center at 2:30 a.m., he did not come out until 12:30 p.m., doubly shocked by his attack and by his hospital treatment.
The journey of victims of sexual assault is always a delicate subject. Depending on whether it is a woman, a man, an adult or a minor, the protocol is not quite the same, to collect the first possible evidence, such as DNA, take samples, establish ITTs or observe injuries.

In a criminal case like this, it is the director of the hospital who receives a requisition from the courts, to proceed with the examination of the victim. This Tuesday, June 21, two consecutive refusals slowed down the procedure. “As he is a boy, the gynecology department did not want to take him in. We explained to my son that he had to be seen by a forensic doctor, ”explains the father of the young man, revolted by the situation. “We left him like that, for hours, without him being able to wash, no one to talk to him, comfort him… And the only pathologist available, he was in Rennes. »
“The outraged emergency physician”
“In the emergency room, fortunately, we had to deal, in the end, with a particularly nice doctor, who himself was outraged… It was he who ended up doing the examination”, still remembers the father of the victim. “For my son, it’s done, it’s too late. But for the others, there are really things to improve. »

The hospital confirms
“These questions are legitimate, in the traumatic context that we know”, recognizes the management of the Briochin hospital this Thursday, June 30. After a “first analysis of the situation” of the young man, “the hospital confirms that the circuit of the medico-legal care of the patient in question is perfectible. This is due, in particular, to the fact that sexual assaults against men are much less frequent situations than sexual assaults committed against women. »
“As regards women who are victims of sexual violence, their care circuit is well known to professionals. The victims are referred to the gynecology sector of the hospital, in particular for medico-legal care (gynecological examination, samples). »
Lack of forensic
But the situation experienced by this young adult has relaunched the debate on medico-legal care in the territory. In Saint-Brieuc, the lack of a medical examiner is a recurring problem for the judicial authorities.
The only pathologist in the department is necessarily overwhelmed. And if the creation of a pediatric medico-judicial reception unit (UAMJP) within the hospital has greatly facilitated things for minors, for adult victims, the care is sometimes more delicate.
The Saint-Brieuc public prosecutor’s office recently submitted a request for the creation of a local medico-judicial unit, which would complement the UAMJP, with an associated legal clerk. But for an implementation at what deadline?
