In a racist tweet Monday that was quickly reported to the Museum of Shame, the Arlington County Republican Committee in Virginia suggested that two Democratic congressmen of color should retire and go to work as lobbyists for the Taliban.
The remark, addressed to Reps Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.), came in response to a BBC report on the dire financial situation of the Taliban resulting in an apparent desire to hire a lobbyist in Washington, DC
The tweet drew immediate criticism, prompting the Arlington GOP to defend itself by pointing to a Washington Post opinion piece about Omar not supporting Israel enough. This article was written by Marc Thiessen, a fellow of the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.
“This tweet is not about race, but the team’s continued support for anti-American sentiment abroad,” the Arlington GOP tweeted, using the nickname for the House Democratic group which also includes Representative Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Michigan), Jamaal Bowman (DN.Y.) and Cori Bush (Mosque).
As tempting as it may be to pass off the tweet as a terrible joke – a line Republicans have used unconvincingly and often during Donald Trump’s tenure in the White House, stoking this kind of hatred has very real consequences.
Ocasio-Cortez told Vanity Fair last summer she received all kinds of threats, often seeing a wave after lies and far-right attacks were amplified by the conservative media.
“I would wake up in the morning and literally receive a stack of photos that were transmitted by the Capitol Police or the FBI,” she told the magazine. “Like, ‘These are the people who want to kill you today.’ “
