Algiers will start producing the Russian vaccine against Covid-19 from September. Part of the production will be intended in particular for African countries.
Lotfi Benbahmed, Algerian Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, announced on public radio on April 7 that his country would launch the production of Sputnik V in September. In comments reported by Reuters, he specified that the production, which will be done in partnership with Moscow, was in part intended for the African continent.
“Algeria will take its […] responsibility in the vaccination of African populations ”, he added.
Algeria has already received 50,000 doses of the Russian vaccine against Covid-19, which has also been authorized in nearly 60 countries.
According to the minister, the vaccine will be produced in the city of Constantine in partnership with the public company Saidal, with the help of an “Indian laboratory specializing in the production of vaccines” whose name he did not specify.
