Fighting rages in Bakhmout, eastern Ukraine. The region constitutes the most active and violent front of this phase of the war. Russia, struggling for victories after a series of reverses in the regions of Kharkiv and Kherson, is on the offensive, supported by the mercenaries of the Wagner group. Our reporters James André and Mayssa Awad met civilians surviving under the bombs.
Bakhmout under a rain of bombardments. For months, this city in eastern Ukraine has suffered Russian artillery strikes. More than 90% of the population fled. While most of the buildings have been destroyed or had their panes blown off during explosions, the last inhabitants of the city must subsist without electricity, gas, running water, heating or network.
A humanitarian center tries to help them, offering food, hot drinks, electricity and sometimes even Wi-Fi.
“We are human, so yes, we are afraid! But we have to take care of the elderly: half of them are alone, they need help, we know what they need. not us, who will take care of it?” explains Tatiana, one of the humanitarian volunteers.
