How to beat Laurent Wauquiez? Faced with the outgoing president (Les Républicains) who will represent himself, all in confidence and in a position of strength, the political staffs of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region are looking for a parade, a few months before the regional elections. On Wednesday January 13 in the evening, representatives of left-wing parties and movements and ecology met by videoconference, to discuss the conditions of a common strategy to try to take over the presidency of the second region of France in the former minister of Nicolas Sarkozy.
Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), Socialist Party (PS), Insubordinate France, Communist Party, Radical Left Party, Génération.s, Place publique, Nouvelle Donne, Ensemble! 69… The executives and representatives of the left and ecology components met for the second time, after a similar meeting on December 19, 2020. “Everyone came back to the discussion table, things have been moving for a few days”, reports a participant in the meeting.
A less strong green wave
Left alone in the campaign for three months, environmentalists participate in collective reflection, and this is a new fact. “It is obvious that neither the left nor the environmentalists will be able to win alone. For the moment, we have succeeded in bringing together the environmental pole around an ambitious transition project. The municipal authorities have shown that there is a very strong expectation from the inhabitants of this region ”, entrust to World Fabienne Grebert. Head of the list of environmental candidates, the regional councilor from Haute-Savoie wants to reproduce what made the recent municipal successes of EELV in several large cities of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, such as Annecy, Grenoble or Lyon: to aggregate the good will to defend the environment, hope to come out ahead in the first round, and take the leadership of the rally in the second. “My legitimacy and the dynamics of the campaign which has just started put me in a favorable position”, assures Mme Grebert.
At this stage, the ecologists participate in the discussions with a view to a rally in the second round, but do not openly mention the development of union lists from the first. Completely new campaign circumstances, the end dates of which remain uncertain, disturb their battle plan. Covid effect? The green wave, at this stage, seems weaker than expected compared to the municipal ones. The environmentalist list is credited with a score of 12% in the first round, in an IFOP-Fiducial survey carried out in November 2020 for Lyon Capital and Sud Radio. Far behind Laurent Wauquiez, placed at 31%, of the National Rally (RN), at 20%, and shoulder to shoulder with La République en Marche (LRM) and the PS, located between 13% and 12%. In all cases, triangular or quadrangular, Laurent Wauquiez would win the second round hands down.
