His list of accolades is long and includes 11 Premier League titles and two Champions Leagues.

Scholes was part of the revered ‘Class of ’92’ who enjoyed huge success for the club.

However, the midfielder revealed his surprising drinking habits early on which caught the club’s attention.

Speaking to Class of 1992 graduate Gary Neville on The Overlap, Scholes revealed what happened.

Neville: “I remember, you were going home by bus from the training ground.”

Scholes: “Three buses.”

Neville“Three buses, was that it?” On a Friday you would have a few pints on the way home before a game on Saturday.

Scholes: “I know. Crazy, madness.

“Sometimes we would stay in there until eight or nine at night from midday, I’m not proud of that, before the A and B teams on a Saturday night.”

Neville: “And you would still be fine?”

Scholes“Sometimes. Most of the time, but that was my way of life. I was brought up in pubs as a kid.

“Anywhere I went with my mum and dad as a kid it involved a pub, that I was outside the pub kicking a ball against the wall. Kids weren’t allowed in pubs so I was just outside waiting for my mum and dad the whole time.

“I remember one time, when I was 16, 17 or 18 when I was with the youth team, Eric Harrison called me dad and said ‘we’re a little worried about of Paul’s drinking.

Neville: “Did they know it?”

Scholes“They had to do it, I don’t know how. Whether someone yelled at me or not, I don’t know.

Neville joked: “Probably Phil!”

Scholes“They said they were a bit worried about my drinking. I remember my dad saying ‘he’s got a right to have fun, right?’

“I thought ‘f***, dad, you shouldn’t really say that. No, no, he doesn’t drink.

“That’s what I was brought up [on]. Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and sometimes Monday, went out.

Neville“Did you drink that many times a week? I didn’t know that myself.

Scholes“I didn’t tell anyone, did I?

“When I turned 18 I probably was. All my mates were around the pub all the time.

“I used to come and watch my mates play football on a Sunday morning in a pub.”
