As it should be, the Ildarais had the first of this cultural event: in the Petit Courrier de l’île d’Arz dated Sunday, January 23, the mayor, Jean Loiseau, announces an extraordinary exhibition of the artist – visual artist Daniel Buren, author, among others, of the world-famous striped sculptures in the courtyard of the Palais Royal in Paris.

Seven works on the island

Seduced by the atmosphere of the island of Arz, between sea and countryside, the artist has designed seven works that will highlight and fit into the Ildar landscape. Known for his vertical stripes, Daniel Buren will not deviate from his style, installing sculptures under the curved branch of a tree, or even a large square opening onto a field, with the bell tower on the horizon, between Penero and the town.

An exhibition that will shine the island of Arz

Led by Joël Benzakin, the exhibition will be inaugurated in June, and will continue until October 2023. “This intervention by Daniel Buren on the Ile d’Arz will demonstrate that our island is not just a fixed showcase that we come to contemplate, but an authentic place of creation, an authentic place of life”, rejoices the mayor, Jean Loiseau, at the initiative of the invitation made to Daniel Buren. The exhibition is “an event that will radiate throughout the region and beyond. It will have undeniable tourist and economic spin-offs,” he underlines.

Ildarese craftsmen mobilized?

Far from being designed solely for people from outside, this exceptional exhibition will mobilize the population of the island. Thus, it is an Ildarese craftsman-carpenter who will manufacture Daniel Buren’s installations, and another who will place them in the landscape. “Thanks to a mobile sawmill, whenever possible, the wood used will come from trees on the island felled by winter storms,” says Jean Loiseau. Kindergarten and primary students will follow the construction and installation of the works on their island step by step.
