Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has been ridiculed online after being snubbed by European diplomats who allegedly refused to meet with him due to last week’s violent assault on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump.
The snub prompted Pompeo to cancel a planned trip to Europe this week.
Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn called Trump a “criminal” and a “political arsonist to be brought to court” in a radio interview with RTL.
Reuters reported that Asselborn, along with other European Union figures, all refused to meet Pompeo on the two-day trip planned. A diplomatic source told the news agency that the allies were “embarrassed” by Pompeo after last week’s violence in Washington.
And Pompeo’s critics on Twitter are wondering what happened to his self-proclaimed “swagger”.
Pompeo has repeatedly boasted of “swagger”, even calling the agency the “Swagger Department”. Earlier this month, he launched a boastful Twitter thread using his own coined definition of “swagger” to congratulate himself.
Now, with the reputation of the United States in shambles and major allies rejecting even a single encounter, Pompeo’s critics ask him where the “swagger” has gone:
