In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Bernstein described Trump as “deceived”, “delusional” and “the most dangerous president in our history”, warning that it was “imperative that he be held in a straitjacket constitutional in the coming days ”.
Cooper asked Bernstein how the country can move forward when so many Trump supporters believe his lie that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
“This is the crime of his Republican facilitators,” Bernstein replied, noting that nearly 200 representatives from the GOP House voted earlier today against Trump’s impeachment because of the insurgency that rocked Washington last week .
Bernstein compared the current support of Republicans in Congress for Trump to much less support for former President Richard Nixon over the Watergate scandal, which prompted him to resign.
“It’s the huge difference in dynamics,” explained Bernstein. “Because this president, in his irrational, illegal and seditious conduct, was made possible by his Republican sect in Congress, and there have been no restrictions imposed on him by that sect.
