How the EU is supporting the European film industry at this year’s Cannes Film Festival

Fourteen films currently presented at the Cannes Film Festival this year have received support from the European Commission.

The European Commission has funded many European films at the Cannes Film Festival, including four in the running for the coveted Palme d’Or.

Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, went to the Palais des Festivals to present the results of the Commission’s action and unveil its Media Perspective.

“I presented the Media Outlook which is in fact a very in-depth study which has been carried out by our services to see the main trends [in the film industry] that we know and draw conclusions from it,” said Breton. “It’s obviously the emergence of the platforms and how we position ourselves in relation to them…it’s the funding, how to further increase the funding, and we obviously intend to continue.

By financing numerous European co-productions and supporting films in the world’s biggest festivals, Europe is responding to an extremely competitive and constantly evolving market, while affirming its cultural and artistic values, as well as its industrial and technological know-how. .
