Jacob deGrom faces another health problem. The Mets ace was diagnosed with flexor tendonitis in his pitcher’s arm on Friday night after being pulled out of his start against the Padres earlier.
DeGrom missed three starts in May with lateral inflammation and discomfort in his right side. Now he is considering possible time off due to an arm problem.

The 32-year-old deGrom was special when he was able to take the ball. He lowered his ERA to 0.56 with six scoreless innings against San Diego. His 10 strikeouts gave him 103 in 64 innings.
But he was pulled after just 80 throws, and TV cameras showed him talking with a team coach. This raised the anguish of Mets fans.
What’s next for deGrom? Here’s everything we know about his injury and the latest news on when he could return to the mound.
What is Jacob deGrom’s injury?
The Mets reported that deGrom had right flexor tendonitis. The flexor tendon runs from the forearm to the base of the fingers and controls the ability of the fingers to bend and grip objects. Tendonitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon.
How long will Jacob deGrom be away?
DeGrom’s timeline is unknown, but he told reporters after the game he might not miss any action.
“I’ve had a few elbow problems before and I know what it looks like. So my worry level isn’t too high”, he said, by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
DeGrom was in the IL with elbow problems twice during his MLB career, in 2018 and 2019. He was voted the National League Cy Young Award recipient both seasons.
Still, it’s likely the Mets will be careful with their staff anchor again. The team placed him on the injured list in mid-May due to discomfort in the right side. Friday’s departure was his fourth since its reactivation on May 25. He has been scratched since a May 4 departure due to irritation to the lateral muscles.
New York has been working on injuries on its rotation all year. Noah Syndergaard (elbow) and Carlos Carrasco (hamstrings) have been out all season, and Taijuan Walker (side) have been spending time on the injured list.
