HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The nuns of the Astros rally might not have made their way inside Minute Maid Park without Mattress Mack’s background in high school.

During the American League Championship Series, it was hard to miss the Astros Angels in the outfield. In central field, a group of about 60 towels waved the towels and cheered on the Houston team.

But they weren’t your typical fans. Instead, it was a group of nuns.

The sisters were able to get tickets from Jim McIngvale of Gallery Furniture, also known as “Mattress Mack”, who recalled that it was not easy at first.

“My nuns have to prepare lesson plans for the children the next day,” McIngvale recalls. “I said, give them a break! “

McIngvale thought Astros fans would love to see the nuns, but he had no idea how much attention they would receive.

“I thought people would like this,” McIngvale recalls. “They’re in the Coke suite, which is pretty high. They love to put the TV camera inside Minute Maid on them.”

Nuns are no strangers to Mattress Mack. They teach a class inside the school in its furniture store. But the connection is deeper.

“I went to Dominican high school in Dallas many years ago,” Mcingvale explained. “Bishop Lynch High School, my father founded this high school 50 years ago, so I’ve been close to some Dominican priests and Dominican nuns for years.”

Over the years, Mcingvale said he donated mattresses and furniture to the group. This time, he opted for tickets to the Astros’ playoffs for the nuns.

“They have dedicated themselves to a cause. A singular cause. And, these days, it is worth admiring,” said McIngvale.

It’s an admiration that Astros fans fall in love with too – angels in the outfield who will be in the first two games of the World Series.

“In many ways we are in a dark age right now, and nuns are shining a bright light, as President Bush would have said 41,” McIngvale said.

The Astros have not lost with the nuns here. They won ALCS matches one and six with the nuns.

If they win the next two games, ABC13 asked Mattress Mack if he would fly the nuns to Atlanta. He didn’t go that far.
