Hot-air balloon crash: New Mexico victims identified

New Mexico Point out Police in a Sunday information release identified the pilot as Nicholas Meleski, 62, and passenger Susan Montoya, 65. John Montoya, 61, was taken to a healthcare facility and died of his injuries, the release explained.

All the victims were from Albuquerque, police reported. The metropolis is a well-known site for ballooning and hosts the Worldwide Balloon Festival each fall.

CNN earlier claimed that retired Albuquerque police officer Martin Martinez, 59, and his spouse, Mary Martinez, 62, experienced died. Mayor Tim Keller named them in a news conference Saturday.

The incident took place about 7:30 a.m. regional time Saturday, police reported.

NMSP mentioned that the initial investigation found that the balloon struck an overhead ability line as it descended toward the ground. The basket turned engulfed in flames.

The Countrywide Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident, as CNN earlier noted.
