Hossein Vafaei became the first Iranian player to win a ranking title, beating Mark Williams in the Snooker Shoot Out final.
Vafaei won the single-frame final with a break of 71 and dedicated the victory to her late grandmother.
“It’s for you grandma,” the 27-year-old told Eurosport. “It’s Mother’s Day in Iran and I’m very proud to have made it.
“It’s a great achievement for a country like Iran. No one knew about snooker before. Now they do.”
Three-time world champion Wales Williams only had the chance to play one shot in the final with world number 42 Vafaei sinking a long, tricky red after the break.
“I thought I played a pretty good save there and what a fantastic red that was,” Williams said. “To take this break under pressure to win your first tournament, hats off to him.”
