Rosa Brooks, a law professor at Georgetown University, blamed the mass shooting in Highland Park on Americans being “slaves” to the Constitution, “written over 230 years ago by a small group of slave-owning white men,” Tuesday.
During a July 4 parade in Illinois, a gunman shot and killed at least seven people, wounding dozens more. The suspect is currently in police custody, although authorities have not yet released a motive.
MSNBC “The ReidOut” host Joy Reid spoke to a panel that mourned the lives lost but called for tougher gun control legislation.
“It’s time to say that no one in America needs an assault weapon. It’s something the military needs. It’s not something people need. t, he didn’t need that gun,” MSNBC legal analyst Jill Wine-Banks said.

Although Chicago and Highland Park’s gun laws are among the strictest in the nation, Brooks instead focused on the Supreme Court’s decision finding New York’s concealed carry laws to be unconstitutional.
“We now live in this world too and we caused it ourselves. We can’t say, oops, it’s the fault of the Russians, they shouldn’t have invaded us. Or oops, it’s Al -Qaeda It’s It’s 100% us and it’s because we are basically slaves to a document that was written over 230 years ago by a small group of white male slave owners “Brooks said.
Several liberals have appealed the Supreme Court ruling since it was announced in June, with many hosts and guests suggesting that guns have more rights than women.
Brooks added: ‘And we can’t get out of the bondage that we’ve imposed on ourselves by feeling obligated – everything that’s decided by our Supreme Court is decided by reference to this ancient document that just doesn’t serve us well. . It causes huge problems and huge tragedies at this point.”

In April, Reid also denounced the Supreme Court as a “pro-righteous white Christian court” for taking up cases involving religious liberty.
Later in the segment, Brooks agreed with Reid that a major problem in the country is the ease with which AR-15 weapons can be acquired.

“The harm people can do with things like AR-15s is staggering. You talk to military veterans, talk to police officers, and they’ll all say they’re basically weapons of war. They’re not weapons. that people use for legitimate purposes. These are weapons that people use to commit mass murder, period,” Brooks said.
