Harry Maguire’s nightmarish form continues as he stumbles Jamal Musiala inside the box leading to England falling behind against Germany in Nations League clash

Harry Maguire’s nightmarish form continued on the international stage as he gave away the penalty that saw England fall behind against Germany.

The Three Lions and Manchester United defender mistimed his tackle on Jamal Musiala, who fell into the box early in the second half.

It appeared Maguire got away with it, but referee Danny Makkelie then pointed the spot after a VAR review.

Ilkay Gudogan netted the resulting kick to give Germany the lead in the Nations League clash at Wembley.

“We can’t have arguments there,” former England international Struart Pearce said in commentary for talkSPORT.

“Good foot movement from Musiala and Maguire couldn’t move his fast enough.”

Kai Havertz then doubled Germany’s advantage with a delightful curling effort from the edge of the box.

That’s when the curtains came down for England, but three goals in 12 minutes – scored by Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane – saw Gareth Southgate’s men turn the game around.

But England were denied the famous victory as Kai Havertz pushed the ball on the rebound after Nick Pope was unable to hold off Leroy Sane’s effort from long range.

The thrilling game may raise further questions about Maguire’s credentials to play in the England defense at the World Cup, but former Three Lions defender Stuart Pearce is impressed with how he responded.

“I think the child [Harry Maguire] has character,” Pearce told talkSPORT after the game.

“He’s been under the microscope for a bit over the last calendar year, potentially, I don’t know how long, I’m not a social media enthusiast.

“Yet he puts himself out there, and he keeps going, and he doesn’t sink.

“He got injured late in the game and he’s halfway through a German player. To not let down his teammates.

“Sometimes those are the individuals you want to fight with.”
