Hard Hat mysteriously travels 3,300 miles from Maine to Norway

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A man in Norway discovered a Maine Department of Transportation hard hat more than 3,300 miles (5,310 kilometers) from his home.

Sigbjørn Eide said he was collecting rubbish earlier this month along the Norwegian coast when he came across the white helmet buried in seaweed. Eide spotted an American flag and MaineDOT logo on the helmet, The Boston Globe reported Tuesday.

When he returned home later that day, Eide said he discovered the hat belonged to the Maine Department of Transportation and contacted the department through social media.

Edie told MaineDOT on Feb. 8 that he “was amazed and impressed with the long journey the little helmet had made,” the newspaper reported.

On Tuesday, MaineDOT posted on Facebook that Eide had found the hat miles from Maine.

“Sigbjørn was walking around and found a MaineDOT helmet in a fjord, approximately 3,300 miles from MaineDOT headquarters,” the department said. “We don’t know exactly how it happened, but we are happy to have a new correspondent!”

A MaineDOT spokesperson said the department will not be asking Eide to return the hat and plans to send him state items.
