At least 120 people were killed and 100 others injured in a crash during a Halloween celebration in Seoul on Saturday, South Korean officials said.
People were crushed to death when a large crowd started moving down a narrow alley, officials said.
Seoul’s Yongsan fire chief said the death toll could rise and many injured were in critical condition, according to media reports.
“The area is still chaotic, so we are still trying to determine the exact number of injured people,” said Moon Hyun-joo, an official with the National Fire Agency, Reuters reported.
There were reportedly 100,000 revelers in the area celebrating the first outdoor maskless Halloween event since the pandemic.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a statement calling on authorities to ensure prompt treatment of the injured and review security at festival sites, The Associated Press reported. He also asked the Health Ministry to quickly deploy disaster medical assistance teams and secure beds in nearby hospitals to treat the injured, the AP said.
