Borussia Dortmund forward believes the three center-backs stand out from their peers in the modern era
Erling Haaland expressed his belief that Sergio Ramos, Virgil van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly are the best defenders in the world.
Haaland has been the bane of center-backs across Europe since entering the scene with Red Bull Salzburg in the first half of the 2019-20 campaign.
However, the Austrian side quickly proved they wouldn’t do the trick by beating Genk 6-2, with Haaland helping themselves to a hat-trick, and they produced an equally brilliant offensive performance against Liverpool on Matchday 2.
Haaland got on the scoresheet in a 4-3 loss at Anfield and scored five more goals in the group, including three against Napoli.
The Norwegian striker’s performances saw him transfer € 20m (£ 18m / $ 25m) to Borussia Dortmund in January, and since then, he has solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young players.
The 20-year-old now has plenty of experience playing at the highest level in both Bundesliga and the Champions League, with very few defenses capable of warding off a man who has scored 33 goals in his first 32 outings for BVB.
Van Dijk and Koulibaly couldn’t stop Haaland when he was at Salzburg, but he sees the pair as masters of their craft at the back, with Madrid captain Ramos – whom he has yet to face in person .
“I have to say, for me, that the three best in the world are Sergio Ramos, Virgil van Dijk and Kalidou Koulibaly. All three are good, strong and intelligent, “said the Dortmund talisman Verdens gang.
Haaland also opened up about his insatiable thirst for goals, adding: “For me it’s like a drug, there is no better feeling than after scoring.”
Former Salzburg Leader will be back in action with Dortmund when they face Wolfsburg on January 3, after fully recovering from muscle injury.
Haaland was forced out of BVB’s last six matches before the winter break, with the German giants now lagging behind Bayern Munich by eight points in the Bundesliga standings.
