GOP senator: ‘I don’t think Trump can win a general election’

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said he doesn’t believe former President Donald Trump can win a general election for president.
“I don’t think Trump can win a general election,” Cassidy said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” when asked about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ assertion that there is no has only three “credible” candidates for president in 2024 – himself, Trump and President Joe Biden – and only two (himself and Biden) who could win in November.
Cassidy pointed out that the statement was also a way to dismiss “formidable” GOP opponents, like South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, who filed paperwork to run on Friday. “Just take it as a competitor trying to distract others,” Cassidy said. DeSantis hasn’t officially entered the race yet, but the Republican governor is expected to launch his campaign this week.
