A Republican lawmaker who suggested same-sex marriage was part of a “scourge” affecting society during a House speech sparked a backlash on social media.

Representative Bob Good, of Virginia, referred to the Bible during a debate Tuesday on new anti-domestic violence legislation.

“Almost everything that plagues our society can be attributed to failure to follow God’s law, its rules, and its definition of marriage and family.

He then attacked the bill’s gender identity provisions, saying they “would force faith-based providers … to violate their deeply held beliefs or to stop their work altogether.”

The independent contacted Mr Good’s office for comment.

The remarks sparked a scathing reaction online.

“Not only is this representative Bob Good completely wrong, it is grossly insulting to all survivors and victims of domestic violence,” the Secular Coalition for America tweeted.

Author Hemant Mehta wrote that this was “particularly ironic” as Mr. Good had previously worked as a fundraiser for Liberty University’s athletics program.

“This is Liberty U., the school known for following God’s rules … and for repeatedly ignoring / dismissing allegations of sexual assault by female students.”

One person asked how Mr. Good explained his support for former President Donald Trump, “who personifies everything the Bible teaches to reject such as greed, indifference, lies, cheating, adultery and betrayal. “.

Another wrote that Mr. Good was a “critical fanatic who believes that religion has a role in politics to exclude and judge a large part of our society”.

While his opponent in the 2020 race for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, Denver Wriggleman, wrote: “What plagues our society are idiots. “

Mr. Good, who claims to have presented himself as a “biblical and constitutional conservative,” has been a staunch supporter of Mr. Trump and has voted to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.
