GOP congressman bursts into Blinken during hearing in Afghanistan: “We don’t need to hear lies”

A GOP congressman broke out to Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his hearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, saying Congress did “not need to hear lies”.

Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., Who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan, had a heated exchange with Blinken as the time allotted for the Congressman to question the Secretary of State drew on his end.

Mast criticized the administration’s handling of the pullout, highlighting Biden’s controversial call with the former Afghan president, leading the Florida Republican to proclaim he “didn’t believe a word,” the secretary said.

“I don’t want to hear from the secretary,” Mast said. “He lies to us when he appears in front of us.”

“I don’t want to hear from the secretary,” the congressman repeated to himself. “We don’t need to hear lies.”

Mast also showed Blinken the photos of the thirteen servicemen killed in the Kabul suicide bombing while reading their names, ages and quotes from their families.

Republicans on the committee blasted Blinken during the first of his two hearings on the Biden administration’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan. Several Republicans have told Blinken he should step down.

Democrats, meanwhile, largely defended Blinken and the Biden administration during the hearing, with many Democrats blaming former President Donald Trump instead.

During the hearing, Blinken also said that at the end of last week, around 100 U.S. citizens remained stranded in Afghanistan.

In addition, the secretary of state said that “several thousand” US permanent residents also remain in Afghanistan.
