Gmail is rolling out its latest Material You redesign and search improvements to all users – TechCrunch

If you feel like you’ve seen a lot of “Gmail redesign” posts over the past few months, it’s not just you: Google has been teasing and testing features for a new in-app view quick access to applications such as Chat and Meet. since the beginning of the year. Last month, it also introduced a new look for Gmail based on the Material You design philosophy. Now all of this is ultimately rolling out in a single update to all users in the coming weeks.

Let’s get a few things clear. Hardware You redesign with new shades for reading emails and all panels are rolled out for everyone. The built-in view – which has the side panel with Mail, Chat, Spaces and Meet icons – is rolling out to everyone who has chat enabled. If you don’t like it, you can switch back to the old Gmail view via the Quick Settings menu.

The new redesign brings filter buttons called search bullets like “Has an attachment” or “Unread” to the inbox view. Previously, these filters were available in the search box or when users browsed through query results, which meant that users had to go through that extra step to access these filters.

The company is also rolling out improvements to contextual search suggestions. Google now prioritizes first name and email addresses over last name when searching for contacts. Additionally, Gmail will consider historical conversations while displaying personalized suggestions. For example, it will display the name of a colleague you frequently interact with rather than another person with the same name.

Google said it’s also working on optimizing the emoji and Gmail experience for tablets with the goal of shipping those features later this year. Earlier this week, the company introduced new tablet-focused features for Drive, Keep, Docs, Slides and Sheets, including drag-and-drop of images and files into apps and a multi-window experience for Drive. Hopefully Google will introduce some of these features to Gmail.
