Gerrit Cole bolsters Cy Young’s case as Yankees tear Tigers apart

[ad_1]

DETROIT — The Yankees won’t have a playoff run to make in September, but they can at least help bolster Gerrit Cole’s bid for Cy Young.

That train continued to roll Wednesday night at Comerica Park, where Cole — even without his most dominant elements — threw six solid innings and got plenty of support in a 6-2 win over the Tigers.

Gleyber Torres scored for a third straight game, one of three homers hit by the Yankees on Wednesday as they earned their first series win in 11 tries – their last coming when they swept the Royals 21-4. July 23.

If only the Yankees played in the AL Central.

Although the series-clinching victory came too late to make much of a difference, the Yankees (65-68) at least gave Cole another victory.

The Yankees ace, whose offense and/or bullpen has cost him a handful of wins this season, improved to 12-4 and maintained his ERA at 2.95.

Gerrit Cole, who earned his 12th victory, bolstered his Cy Young record by limiting the Tigers to two runs in the Yankees’ 6-2 victory.

He gave up two solo homers to Jake Rogers and Spencer Torkelson, but otherwise met little resistance while striking out seven.

Cole has now allowed two runs or fewer in 21 of his 28 starts this season, the most at the majors.

The Yankees took a 2-0 lead before Cole threw a pitch, taking advantage of the Tigers’ wild opener Brendan White.

DJ LeMahieu then homered in the second inning to make it 3-0, hitting his fifth homer in his last eight games.

Anthony Volpe doubled to start the third inning and came on to score on fellow countryman Everson Pereira’s RBI single.

Giancarlo Stanton faced Torres in the fourth set to extend the lead to 6-1 which was a big boost for Cole.

Ian Hamilton relieved Cole and pitched three blank innings to spare the rest of the bullpen, giving the Yankees a chance to sweep the Tigers (59-74) Thursday afternoon.
