Germany’s opposition AfD ahead of Green Party for first time since 2018: poll

BERLIN (Sputnik) – The right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has edged out governing coalition member party Alliance 90/The Greens in an INSA poll for the first time since 2018.

According to a poll carried out by the Institute for New Social Responses (INSA) for the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, the AfD would have won 16% of the votes in the legislative elections if they were held this Sunday.
An opposition bloc made up of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria lost 1 percentage point, winning 28% of the vote among those polled, but was still ahead of the Ruling center-left Social Democratic Party of Germany, which received 21%, according to the poll.

The survey indicated that the Left Party received 5% of the vote among respondents, while the Liberal Democratic Party received 8% of the vote.

The survey was conducted among 1,202 German citizens sampled from March 13-17. The margin of error dies not exceed 3.1%.

The Bundestag on Friday passed an electoral reform that will limit the number of seats in the German parliament to 630 from 736 from the next legislature, with opposition parties coming out against the changes and promising to challenge them in court.

The changes are expected to come into effect with the next elections scheduled for 2025.
