German government expressed concern over reports of possible deployment of Russian mercenaries in Mali

BERLIN – The German government expressed concern on Wednesday over reports of a possible deployment of Russian mercenaries in Mali.

Germany has several hundred soldiers participating in United Nations stabilization and European Union training missions in the West African country.

Defense ministry spokeswoman Christina Routsi said if the Malian government goes ahead with the announced plans, Germany will contact its European and international partners and “examine the possible consequences.”

When asked if this included examining whether the base of Germany’s current military mission in Mali was still full, Routsi said, “This is precisely what we will be examining.
