The German government has given the green light to the shipment of “Leopard 2” tanks to Ukraine, according to reports in Der Spiegel.
The German online news site said the government was ready to allow the transfer of at least one company behind the “Leopard 2A6” model to the beleaguered country.
Berlin has faced growing international pressure in recent days to approve sending the tanks to Ukraine. German chancellor Olaf Scholz had the final say, and it is believed the government will also approve licenses for other allied countries to deploy the tanks in Ukraine.
With nearly 3,500 active units in 19 other countries around the world, Rheinmetall AG, a German defense contractor that manufactures the Leopard 2’s 120mm smoothbore gun, says the tank has been deployed by “more countries than any other”.
