German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has tested positive for coronavirus, his spokesman told the dpa news agency on Monday.
Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said Scholz had mild symptoms and immediately went into self-isolation. He canceled all public appearances this week but plans to participate in internal government meetings virtually, Hebestreit said.
Scholz returned from a two-day official trip to the Gulf States on Sunday and before that he was at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Scholz was not the only government official to contract the virus this week: Home Secretary Nancy Faeser announced Monday morning on Twitter that she had also tested positive.
