George Santos’ $700,000 campaign loan mystery deepens

Saurav Ghosh, a former FEC attorney who is the director of the center for federal campaign finance reform, said his staff were reviewing the altered documents, which are hundreds of pages long. But, he said, so far he and other employees said the issues raised in their complaint had not been resolved.

According to financial information that Mr. Santos filed as a candidate, he claimed that in just a few years, he had gone from $55,000 a year to owning and running a business, the Devolder Organization, worth over a million dollars.

In a radio interview last month, Mr Santos said the money came from his work at the Devolder organization, which he said involved “deal building” and “specialist advice” for wealthy customers.

But Mr. Santos did not fully disclose his clients or provide more details about his earnings. Asked about the source of the loan earlier this month on the conservative ‘Bannon’s War Room’ podcast, Mr Santos swerved, saying he had worked hard and was ‘not from Ukraine, Russia or of China”.

Prior to last year, Mr. Santos had already loaned his campaign $80,000, according to campaign documents. He then gave his campaign $500,000 on March 31, 2022, and another $125,000 on October 26.

The $500,000 loan in March is reported on the six campaign documents Mr. Santos has had to submit so far this year, as well as the amended versions his campaign filed on Tuesday. Almost all of the filings indicate that the $500,000 came from his personal funds; the only exception is the amended filing for the first quarter of 2022.

Clarity on the $125,000 loan in October was also lacking. In a post-election campaign filing, Santos gave little information about the loan. But in Tuesday’s amended filing, Mr. Santos’ campaign did not check the box that said the $125,000 came from his personal funds.
