George Floyd murder: police officer Derek Chauvin sentenced to 22 and a half years in prison

White policeman Derek Chauvin was sentenced this Friday to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of African-American George Floyd, a heavy sentence that reflects the global impact of the drama.

“The court sentences you to detention for a period of 270 months, which is ten years more than the sentence” provided for by the Minnesota scale, said Judge Peter Cahill, thirteen months to the day after the death of the black forty-something in Minneapolis.

“My decision is not based on emotion or sympathy,” “or on public opinion,” he added. “I’m not trying to send a message”.

Floyd Family Lawyer Welcomes Verdict Working For Nation ‘Reconciliation’

The lawyer for George Floyd’s family praised the verdict, saying he was working for the “reconciliation” of the nation.

“This historic conviction takes the Floyd family and our nation one step closer to reconciliation by allowing them to turn the page and designate those responsible,” Ben Crump said on Twitter.
