Gavin Lux scores 2-point brace, Dodgers edge Phils 5-4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gavin Lux atoned for an early fielding error with a two-run double in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers avoided a four-game series sweep with a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Cody Bellinger had a two-out triple over Corey Knebel (0-3) and Chris Taylor walked before Lux brought them both home with a brace in the right-hand corner, sparking a frenzied celebration in Chavez Gully.

Lux made a two-out error on a routine groundout in the second inning, allowing the Phillies to score four unearned runs. Aaron Nola started with a 4-2 lead after throwing seven innings on four hits, but Philadelphia’s latest bullpen mishap doomed his four-game winning streak.

Mookie Betts homered and an RBI double for the Dodgers, who avoided their first five-game skid since April 2019.

Shane Greene (1-0) pitched two scoreless relief innings in his season debut for Los Angeles.

Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run single in the Phillies’ second loss of a seven-game West Coast road trip. Garrett Stubbs had two hits and drove in one run, but the Phillies couldn’t get back above .500 for the first time since April 12.

After beating the Dodgers for 29 runs and 37 hits in the first three games, the Phillies went to the Finals uninjured Bryce Harper. They fell just before the franchise’s first four-game sweep at Chavez Ravine since 1985.

Nola struck out eight and walked two while throwing a handful of jams. He was the Phillies’ second straight starter to last seven innings against the mighty Dodgers, who had only allowed two other opposing starters to last that long all season.

Michael Grove had four hits and three walks in the fourth inning of his major league debut. Grove was promoted from Double-A Tulsa to help Los Angeles’ depleted rotation, which is missing several potential starters due to various medical issues.

Lux walked first in the eighth and scored on Betts’ double to leave Jeurys Familia, but the reliever escaped with two takeouts.

Betts hit his seventh homer in his last 20 games in the fourth, but the Dodgers’ roster struggled against Nola. He even fumbled in the seventh inning when a video review overruled the on-court decision and called out Taylor while stealing second.
