Gabrielle Union is done with “low-balling”.
The The best of LA the actress spoke on the September 21 episode of 9 to 5 with theSkimm on how movie studios “dump” black stars of big paychecks. Additionally, she shared her strategy for avoiding bad deals, explaining that the best way to tackle the pay gap is to team up with other stars.
“As black actresses there is almost shame, because we are paid so much less,” she said. “When these Forbes lists are posted of the highest paid actors, you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m a failure … Is that what they do? And I’m far from close. ‘”
Gabrielle said the actresses get fooled when they don’t share their salary information.
“They assume, rightly, and rightly so, that none of us are speaking,” she continued. “And that’s how they fuck each other, because someone will be the carrot person.”
As she recalled, “Sometimes you don’t even know you’re the carrot person. They’re like, ‘Well, Taraji [P. Henson] closed to — I’m using dummy numbers — one million. I mean, if not, Taraji will take it. And you’re like, ‘OK, well, $ 350,000, I guess.’ And Taraji says to me, ‘Girl, I won $ 4 million.’ You say to yourself ‘Wait, what?’ ”
