The family of missing woman Gabby Petito responded on Friday evening after news came out that the family of her fiance, Brian Laundrie, claimed they had not seen him since Tuesday.
“Gabby’s whole family wants the world to know Brian hasn’t gone missing, he’s in hiding. Gabby is missing,” said the law firm of Richard B. Stafford, attorney for the Petito and Schmidt families, in a statement. communicated.

Laundrie’s family made his disclosure earlier on Friday, after officers traveled to North Port, Fla., The house where he lives with his parents, hoping to speak to him. The laundry had been there since September 1, police said. Investigators are also looking for him.
The fiancé has been called a “person of interest” in the case and a statement from the North Port Police Department reiterated Friday evening that he is currently not wanted for a felony.

“We understand the frustration of the community. We are also frustrated,” the statement said. “For six days, the North Port Police Department and the FBI begged the family to contact investigators regarding Brian’s fiancé [sic] Gabby Petito. “
Friday was the first time the family had spoken in detail with investigators, the statement said.
“It is important to note that although Brian is a person of interest in Gabby’s disappearance, he is not wanted for a crime. We are not currently working on a criminal investigation. We are now working on several investigations into missing persons. ”

Petito’s stepfather Jim Schmidt said in a TV interview that he learned that Laundrie’s parents claimed Brian was missing in a TV interview.
“It’s the first time we’ve heard it,” he told CNN on Friday night. “I am very taken aback to hear what we just heard.”
Petito’s mother reported Petito’s disappearance on September 11 to Suffolk County Police in New York City.
The couple had embarked on a cross-country trip in Petito’s 2012 Ford Transit van in early summer. Both documented their trip on Instagram, stopping at several national parks in the West.

Petito’s family last spoke to her on August 25 via Facetime, authorities said while she was in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. A week earlier, the couple had traveled to Utah.
