A New York woman who was traveling across the United States with her fiance is reportedly missing after returning home without her.
Gabby Petito, 22, was last seen on August 24 as she stepped out of a Salt Lake City hotel with her fiance, Brian Laundrie. She was reported missing by her family on the evening of September 11, police said.
Ms Petito and Mr Laundrie had documented their experiences of traveling as “van-lifers” across the United States on a YouTube channel called “Nomadic Statik”.
Here’s everything we know about the case:
In a press release, the Suffolk County Police Department said: “According to the family, they last contacted her during the last week of August. Before the last communication, Petito was said to have been in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, ”adding that anyone with information on his fate should come forward.
Ms Petito’s mother, Nicole Schmidt, told Fox News the couple were heading to Yellowstone National Park next, but Ms Petito did not arrive. Mr Laundrie returned home to Florida without her, in the couple’s 2012 Ford Transit van that police say they have since recovered.
Ms Schmidt said she last spoke to her daughter on the phone on August 25 and received text messages a few days later, although she couldn’t be sure it was actually Ms Petito who had sent them.
“I can’t say much, but she’s not with the van anymore,” Ms. Schmidt said. “I don’t want to say anything more, but for the people who are looking for it, I want them to look for it now, and not this van anymore.”
Ms. Petito’s family is leading the search for her.
His father Joseph told Newsday that the family has suffered a lot since his disappearance: “It’s like]drowning with your hands tied behind you,” he said. “You can’t describe it. You can’t do anything. You can’t control anything.
Ms. Petito is described as a white female, measuring around 5ft 5in and weighing 110lb. She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that says “let it be”.
Ms Schmidt’s husband and son posted two missing person posters on their Instagram accounts, along with a photo of Ms Petito, to help find her. Both said they were unable to “comment further as there is an ongoing investigation.”
The couple’s Instagram accounts show their trip began on July 2 and has since covered Monument Rocks in Kansas, Colorado Springs, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Zion National Park and Bryce National Park in Utah and Canyonlands National Park.
“Downsizing our lives to fit this tiny little van was the best decision we’ve ever made,” Mr Laundrie wrote on Instagram this month. in nature every day has not been a sacrifice at all. “
