Friends for the benefit of the financial world – TechCrunch

Hello and welcome to Equity, a podcast on the business of startups, where we break down the numbers and nuances behind the headlines.

This is our Friday episode, a look at top news headlines, startup fundraising cycles, and everything that’s going on in the startup and tech world. Fortunately this week we haven’t talked about NFT, and I don’t think we’ve even said “token” once.

Instead, Mary Ann, Natasha, and Alex went back to what we might think of as the roots of fairness. Here’s what we got into:

  • We started by taking a look at the recent cycle of Fertilis. Fertilis is an Australian startup that works to make the IVF process more reliable. We’re big fans of the concept, even though the startup has a lot of work ahead of it before moving the needle for couples looking to conceive.
  • Mary Ann brought together two very Equity topics: Fintech and SaaS, but even more interesting, fintech which only wants to serve SaaS startups. Even though we’ve tried to define Arc’s relationship with the startups he serves, Alex landed on him being a friend with benefits to the financial world.
  • Speaking of fintech, Brex has (again) made the headlines with its new raise and new framework – thanks to Meta.
  • We keep coming back to the hiring conversation, and with good reason. Career Karma (news here) and SeekOut (news here) have two different strategies when it comes to empowering company employees – and we all agreed that retention, versus placement, is the future of the company. hiring of technologies.
  • We ended with a conversation about accelerators thanks to the news from Y Combinator, and the risk response of it. Additionally, the new AngelList and the Dorm Room Fund remind us that staying a niche in strategy continues to be how early stage venture capital operations win business.

A big hug to all of you for surviving the start of the work year during a wave of COVID. We can do it! We’ll come out like a great team, okay?
